Catching Bubbles

Here is another of my "Merfolk" drawings.  This little fellow is just learning to swim.  His babysitters, these darling fish, are blowing bubbles up in front of the baby's nose and he's trying to chase them.

In my mind's eye, the baby's hands and arms are kicking like the dickens.  He's so excited over those bubbles!

Leigh Grin

This is a portrait of my delightful youngest sister Leigh. She actually liked it, and hung the original in her house!

Using acrylics, this painting is one of the first surreal pieces I've ever created. The funny thing is, it actually does kind of look like my sister--the impish, fun side of her.

Truly, I have been blessed with two of the most wonderful sisters in the entire world.

Beauty Sleep Revisited

When I first started blogging my Sister Clytie and I were bantering about (as sisters do).  This is the challenge I received from my Sissy: "...I hearby challenge thee to a dual!!! You must post a blog of something artistic you did/saw today. And I must do the same!!! Ha! No backing out now!'

And my response: "Oh, Darling and Funny Wench sis, I take up thine challenge! No backing out now--mine gauntlet hath been flung."

Morning Glory Faery - Sunday Scans

She looks a little pensive--Winter has lasted all too long. This drawing is another of my favorites, echoing the rich colors of the Morning Glory flower.

Some of my best childhood memories are embellished with the velvety purple flowers of Morning Glories. Turned upside down, they became beautiful maidens who danced along the tops of the grape vines near my grandmother's house.

It was always a mystery to watch them tightly closing against the night, only to burst into gorgeous flowering in the warm morning sunshine.

Deep Sea Romance

This is number one in a set of various pieces of artwork dedicated to mermaids and merfolk in general!  I thought you would enjoy being the first to see them.  I just now finished the first two.

I love fish--I have a pond full of them.  I decided I didn't want a complex background interrupting the grace of the two merfolk.  Hence these happy looking fishies.  I was pleasantly surprised at the way the fish seem to glow, giving the piece an almost 3-D look.

With the kiss trembling between these two, anyone can see they are deeply in love--Theirs is the classic story of two kingdoms at war.  He is from one, she is from the other.  They will move heaven and earth to be together for the rest of their lives.  Their adventure is only just beginning as they seek to end hostilities between their homelands beneath the sea. 

I have this drawing up for sale on Ebay under Bethartworx.  I'm SO excited!

Flaming Heart - Guest Heart Thursday

One cold winter night I sat before the fire, keeping warm, when I noticed this heart glowing in the depths of the woodstove.  I clicked a photo of that warm heart--and to my surprise found an Angel.

Above you see the angel as I first saw her, flitting above the Flaming Heart.

Butterfly In Full Color

Here is the Butterfly in Full Color!  I used my beloved Prismacolor pencils along with Prismacolor Verithins to add color to the original pen and ink.

I blended the colors using a clear Prismacolor blender pencil.  Then I used a fine point Sharpie to darken and sharpen the outline of the butterfly.  I find if I used Microns after the colored pencils, the bees wax tends to clog the tips.  If the Sharpie gets clogged, I roll the tip from side to side until the ink comes back through.

Graphite Butterfly

While we were away, I had opportunity to do quite a bit of sketching.  This is one of six, 6x6 pieces in graphite, which I will eventually ink and then add color.

I was greatly inspired by our dear Friend Darlene, of Dancing Mangoes, who shows her work from conception to finish.

As I finish each stage of this drawing, I will post it, so you can see my progress!

Valentine Moon - Guest Heart Thursday

There is something so romantic about summertime with its hot days and warm nights.  I am sure should I kiss my darling the moon would turn into a heart.  After 27 years, his kiss still makes my heart beat faster and melts my knees.

Spilled Milk - Illustration Friday

The poor little LeoButterfly has spilled his breakfast of milk from the milkweed plant.  He's heart-broken and is telling his faery friend all about it.  Of course, she will gather another blossom of milk for the tiny fellow, but he's so cute, she's having a hard time not smiling.

I was looking through some old drawings of mine and came across this Pen and Ink of my darling sister Clytie.  I had drawn it from a photo from her younger days.  She had shorter hair then, but was and is, just as lovely.

I thought this piece was especially perfect for today's Guest Heart Thursday.

Faery Magic

This is my second Cloud Painting--back then I used the mouse as my paintbrush.  This took a great deal of painstaking concentration and time.  I thought you might enjoy seeing one of my very first efforts at painting Sky Art.

Here she is as I first saw her, flying over the alley fence, toward the sun.

Diary - Illustration Friday

Mumsie was a writer--even as a child, I remember she wrote and sold stories long before her books were published. One of the blessings of my life is that Mum kept a journal of her quiet times with God.  She not only wrote out her prayers, but would often write about what was happening in the lives of her children and family.  Because of Mum's Journalings I have read how God answered her specific prayers for me.  You can read her wonderful insights at Everybody Loves a Story.  I know she'd love to hear from you.

I learned to journal from watching my darling Mother's example.   I was recently going through one of my old diaries and came across something really funny--so I thought I'd share it with you. Here goes:

"You really NEED to take a bath, son," I said inspecting the dirt my four-year old had thrown into his hair.  

"But Mom," he explained patiently.  "Superman doesn't NEED a bath!"

Fireworx Maiden

The fireworks on the Fourth of July were the best I'd ever seen--I was able to catch a few with my camera.  I actually saw the Maiden's face just before I clicked the camera.

Above you see the Fireworx Maiden as I first glimpsed her--she seems to be smiling!

Fragrance Faery

Here is a closeup of a this fairy's lovely crown.  This drawing is the size of a baseball card.  I love how the detail pops.
