Moon Unicorn -Paint Party Friday

I don't know what it is, but I think unicorns and the moon make a magical combination.  On a full moon it seems anything is possible!  I've always wanted to meet a unicorn--maybe one day I will!

Noble Unicorn -Paint Party Friday

I love unicorns.  They have a certain mystique and beauty about them.  Here the gentle animal bows to the touch of a lovely young maiden.

Above you see my beautiful model Rena, who's graceful poses are endlessly inspiring.

The lady's retreat last weekend was amazing.  I know I was not the only one blessed.  One of the things I love to do is to bring in talented people who do not have a place to showcase their gifts.  This is something which will always be a hallmark of what I hope to be a yearly event.  Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers.  I know my darling Alan would be SO happy and proud!  ((hugs))

Above you see a little doodle I did this week.  I was using a new kind of colored markers.  I loved the way the lines blended to give it a smooth look.

Love at First Sight -Guest Heart Thursday

This saucy unicorn started life on the counter--I saw him in the wood grain, grabbed a pencil and walah!

A moment later I noticed my sketchbook was open and that unicorn was OBVIOUSLY making eyes at this lovely maiden--hence, he joined her on the page...I know,  I know, I have a GREAT imagination!

Lady in Red -Guest Heart Thursday

Here she is, the Lady in Red standing with her blue unicorn friend.  I put color to the lineart drawing (posted earlier) whilst staying at my parents' home to help watch Dad while Mom was attending a writer's conference.  Daddy seemed to enjoy watching the colors and drawing take shape.  Though it was dreadfully hot, I loved staying for a few days in the home of my childhood.  Sometimes it seems as though I see the past and the present superimposed upon one another here...it is a strange feeling.

I get to go back for a few days next week.  I am looking forward to it!  Yes, there are hearts hidden throughout this drawing.  I LOVE hiding hearts for you to find!

Lady in Red -Lineart

Well, she will be the lady in red once I add color.  I haven't decided whether to do this piece in watercolor, or colored pencil yet.  We shall see!  A big thanks to my lovely model, Rena.  She is a real-life fairytale princess.

Nasarah, the Unicorn - Guest Heart Thursday

This is Nasarah, the Unicorn.  The last time she appeared on Guest Heart Thursday, she was without color.  Today, in honor of my niece's graduation from preschool to Kindergarten, I have finished the drawing and will be presenting it to her after the ceremony.

My sweet niece--who loves unicorns very much, gave this unicorn its special name.  She says Nasarah's favorite thing to eat is apples.  The unicorn sleeps in the top of an apple tree.  She also eats snowflakes in winter and skates on the ice.  But in summer the unicorn's favorite thing of all is to twirl!  So when you see those little whirlwinds which often swirl the air in summertime?  It's Nasarah the unicorn, twirling to her heart's content.

I know, I know...I have a GREAT imagination!

Unicorns and Pink Meadows

I hope you don't mind that some of the stories behind my pictures are filled with real life--and death. This story is painful--but ends with great hope.

I remember the day our beloved Grandmother Jenny flew to heaven. I sat in the upstairs hallway and cried in the dark. She ran into the arms of her Savior after a long hard night of struggle.

I began to paint. First a stormy reddish sky. As I wept, I crunched sodden browns, streaks of yellow and shadows of darkness into the murky horizon.

I sat back to ponder the stories Grammie had told of her life. Sharp peaks of hardship thrust through the years. She'd conquered them, one step at a time. I knifed thick paint from my palette, forming jagged mountains. Then tears as I covered the jutting peaks with cool snows reflecting pink from the angry skies above.

As I remembered her words of wisdom and faith, gentle tree-clad hills swelled beneath the mountains . . . I thought of her laughter, and the twinkle of her blue eyes and a bright meadow blossomed with faint pink flowers.

I smiled through my tears, recalling Grammie's vivid imagination. I retraced her wonderful stories peopled with elves and faeries. Then from my brush, the outline of a unicorn emerged. His white coat danced with pinks from the painful red horizon, reflecting the cheery pink flowers at his feet. His dark red and pink mane swooped joyfully against the mountains, and his face grew kind and winsome . . .

Spreading out from the unicorn's feet, yellow centers appeared in the pink flowers, twinkling vividly in the tender green grasses of the meadow.

I looked at that painting for a long, long time, thinking about how delighted Grammie would have been. Then I signed my name.

Painting has a way of expressing my heart.

In the hours I spent wielding my paintbrush, I worked through my pain, sorrow and feelings of anger and loss--to precious memories of my Grandmother's courageous life, to thoughts of her laughter and whimsey, to arrive in a place of peace.

And I can feel her smiling.

Shy Unicorn

I often see the most amazing clouds billowing up over the distant mountains in the East, especially in the early morning.

What a precious surprise to catch this lovely unicorn shyly peeking over her shoulder next to the big tree in the alley.

The Lady and the Unicorn

I've always loved the Unicorn. This wonderful mythological creature was not only known for the single horn sprouting from its forehead, but it was also thought to have a beard like a billy goat, a lion's tail and cloven hooves. His horn was said to neutralize poison.

The unicorn has been described as fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary. He is mysterious and it is said a unicorn can only be approached a lovely maiden who is pure and chaste. The unicorn is noble, beautiful and illusive--I suppose that is why they are so fascinating.

Daddy Update: The wound specialist believes the bone still exposed in Dad's scalp will most likely heal over by itself without surgery. Dad's tests have come back looking great. Please pray for my parents outlook--it is so hard for them to be away from home so long. We are preparing the house so they can go home sometime mid-September. We are praying we can get it done by that time--Mom must return home so she can teach the first of October.
